Jesus Chose a Samaritan Woman

John 4: 7b-14, NLT
Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”
He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.
The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”

“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”
Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

"If you knew the gift God has for you, and who you are speaking to. . ."

Jesus asks the woman to give him a drink.  Look at her face.  Cynical. Fearful. Disappointed. Protective. Alone.
Her life has been a string of bad choices and enduring abuse from many.  She has a 'reputation' and little hope for anything to change.  At first she will not look at, or speak to, the Jewish stranger at Jacob's well in the heat of the day. But she DOES believe that some day, Messiah will arrive. Some day.

"If you knew the gift God has for you, and who you are speaking to. . ."

The stranger tells her she would ask HIM for water, if she knew Him.  He says his water is living water, and his living water will change everything.  AND that all can drink of his living water--Jews, Samaritans, men, women. . .

Watching this scene, I can feel the sorrow in her heart.  The ways of our world are cruel.  Sometimes a pretty facade disguises the truth of a person, or an 'opportunity'. Thinking we will be accepted, or receive approval, or impress others, we may act like we have it all together.  But at some point, the facade fails, or the results are not the ones we wanted.  Why even try?

People-pleaser that I have been, I have worked to be accepted, to impress others.  I have pretended to have it all together, not even realizing how destructively chaotic all my trying and rationalizing and 'fixing' myself had become.

"If you knew the gift God has for you, and who you are speaking to. . ."

Jesus knows me completely, and He teaches me about myself. He says to each of us, "It won't matter who you are or what you've done. Soon it will not be about mountains or temples,  but only about the heart.  It would be good if you believed me!"

Oh friend, if you knew . . .

    ABOUT
    'CHOSEN MOMENTS':

The crowd-funded series "The Chosen," produced by Dallas Jenkins, is such a miracle and an amazing labor of love for Jesus and love for people all over the world who need to know Jesus. Not one episode has disappointed or 'missed' the heart of the message    of life and truth and love and redemption of a world gone rogue.

I ran across one of my favorite clips on Facebook, and the idea popped into my thoughts to post links to those "nuggets" of truth as represented in this series, and share what that vignette spoke to me.

SO, welcome to 'Chosen' Moments.  Whether you have followed this series or not, I hope you will check out these 'shorts' and maybe even comment about what you saw, heard, or felt as you watched it.
